Week 1
Week 1: Studio Activity
Quick Sketches
Our activity for week one involved sketching both natural/organic materials; ie. a pine cone, and materials which are more structurally geometric; ie. a chair. With limited time restraints, we were forced to avoid becoming perfectionistic over the way our sketches looked. While it felt freeing to let go and trust the process, it was hard not to instinctively feel the need to fix mistakes or neaten the sketches.
With each sketch it became easier to loosen up and avoid spending too much time on creating a perfect representation of the chair. With each sketch, you come to realise just how short one minute is, and each time I became more conscious of the balance I needed between quality and quantity.
Prior to sketching the chair, we went over sketching techniques including cross hatching and stippling. These two techniques helped to create dimension to my sketches in an efficient and aesthetic way. We also went over how different line weights are able to communicate depth, importance and proximity. I practiced using different line weights in my negative space drawing of the chair.
On Site Activity: Observing and Documenting the Site
After our group had been allocated to a site, we were instructed to document the site. I used my phone to photograph the area.
After taking photos I sketched elements and spaces within the site.
5-minute sketch drawings
One-minute blind contour drawings.
Group Activity: Photoshopping an object into on of our site photographs
